A video showing four robbers posing as customers to loot a jewellery store in Bihar’s Begusarai has gone viral. Two robbers managed to escape with jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh while the other two were arrested after they were shot at by the owner in self-defence.
According to shop owner Pramod Poddar, his son Rajeev was at the store when the robbers entered. Posing as customers, two robbers entered the store and went to the first floor to look at various jewellery items, followed by two more armed men who brandished guns and began the heist.
CCTV footage of the incident obtained by India Today shows an armed robber asking the customers to stand back as he continues to grab the jewellery items on display. The video further shows the robber jumping across the glass counter and taking a handful of jewellery from a cupboard.
“My house is located close to the shop. Upon hearing the commotion, I rushed to the spot. By the time I arrived, the assailants were attempting to flee. The attackers had also targeted me, but I managed to confront them using a licenced pistol in self-defence. Two of the robbers sustained gunshot injuries which caused panic among the criminals,” he said.
A video that surfaced online showed a huge mob gathered outside the shop as several police officials carried out an investigation inside the store.
“Four individuals arrived at the location, posing as customers. Two of them entered the shop and carried out the criminal act. No one was injured due to the firing by robbers. The jeweller confronted them bravely in self-defence. The jeweller claimed that the robbers took away jewellery worth Rs 35 to 40 lakh,” a top police official stated.
The officials are scanning CCTV footage to gather clues about the whereabouts of the other accused. Police have also recovered a bike that was used by the accused to arrive at the shop.
